Therapy coverage made clearer, gentler, and easier to navigate
Therapy coverage made clearer, gentler, and easier to navigate
Reaching out for support is a meaningful step. Understanding payment and insurance should not add more stress.
At BelongSpace Counselling, I aim to make the process of paying for therapy and using your benefits as simple, transparent, and supportive as possible.
Whether you are new to counselling or returning to therapy, you deserve clear information so you can make decisions with confidence.
Are sessions covered by insurance?
Yes. Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario cover counselling/psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW). As a Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), my services are typically eligible for reimbursement under plans.
Coverage varies depending on your specific plan, but insurers commonly used by clients in Ontario include:
- Sun Life
- Manulife
- Canada Life
- Green Shield Canada
- Blue Cross
- Desjardins
- Equitable Life
- Empire Life
- Beneva
- Other extended health benefit providers
Please note that every plan is different. The best way to confirm coverage is to contact your provider directly.

How does reimbursement work?
Most insurance plans in Canada operate on a pay-and-submit model:
- You pay for your session at the time of booking
- You receive a detailed receipt after your session
- You submit the receipt to your insurance provider
- Your insurer reimburses you according to your plan
- Receipts include all required information (registration number, credentials, service details) for easy submission.
What to ask your insurance provider before your first appointment?
If you are unsure about your coverage, these questions can help:
- Do you cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW)?
- Is psychotherapy or counselling by a social worker included in my plan?
- What is my annual mental health coverage amount? What percentage of each session is reimbursed? Do I need a doctor’s referral for reimbursement? Can I submit receipts online?
- Is there a maximum amount per session?
A short phone call or portal check can often give you the clarity you need before starting. This can help you plan your care with clarity and confidence.
What if I do not have insurance coverage?
You are still welcome here.
Many clients access therapy privately when they do not have extended health benefits or when they prefer more privacy and flexibility in their care. Therapy can still be meaningful and worthwhile even when it is self-funded. Some clients choose to attend weekly, while others come biweekly or monthly, depending on their needs, goals, and resources.
Care can be paced in a way that feels supportive and manageable.
